I treated Whiskey with Maracyn plus for fin rot on his dorsal and anal fin. Tomorrow is the last dose of three. It seems a little better but it's not gone completely. He still has a couple of bloody spots on the tips and his dorsal is almost completely transparent except for the rays. Should I give him one more course?
His water is fine. I tested today and it's 0,0,5 which is what it usually is. I change 20% once or twice in a week and his tank is cycled and filtered.
It doesn't look much better today. The tissue isn't gone it's just so clear you almost can't see it. I took a couple of pics so that I can compare them rather then rely on my eyes, which trick me. Tested his water again (0,0,5) yesterday and did a small change (20%).
I tried aquarium salt originally when they looked like they were growing transparent and the next day the blood spots showed up. I dissolved the salt first so I'm sure I didn't burn him. I'm kinda at a loss. He's been like this for two weeks now. (Oh and his yellow water is from driftwood, it's not dirty. )
I upped the saturation on this one so you can see the blood better and you can see how transparent his dorsal is compared to the rest of his fins.
I was looking at older pictures of him and his dorsal doesn't look any more transparent then it did when I got him but it's really hard to know for sure. To be on the safe side, is there anything else that presents as bloody streaks in the fins? I know, I'm kinda over-stressing over this but I'm not sure what's wrong with him. Lol.
Here's an old pic
Here's one taken tonight. I need fresh eyes to tell me if he's lost finnage.
So I might need Maracyn 2 in that case? I'll finish this run of Maracyn plus and see what happens. Last time I left the carbon in because the bottle said to maintain normal filtration. This time I ripped the blue pad off the carbon and I'm just using the pad. He's not showing any other signs of illness. He's active, he's eating and his scales look fine.
He doesn't have any of that. He looks and acts like he did when I got him except for the bloody spots. It's so frustrating when you don't know what's wrong exactly. Arg. Lol!
My ammonia was .5 when I checked today. I just switched out almost all the water (2 x 50% changes back to back). I made sure my tap ph matched the tank first and heated the water to the right temp. I was testing weekly. I guess I'd better be checking daily for a while. :0 Poor Whiskey!
I use Prime too. I don't know why/how it got so high in just two days. He's happily swimming around an flaring at me right now. I think he's pissed about all the activity. LOL!
I'll just keep up with the maracyn plus, the water changes, and the testing daily until it's back to 0,0,5. If it's been having mini spikes in between my testing then maybe it's ammonia that caused the red streaks. I feel bad now. Bad fish Mommy!
Does anyone know anything about hole in the head disease? I noticed that Whiskey has these tiny pinholes around his face and either some of the scales around his head have started to flake off or there's like a gunk coming off of him. He always had this strange grayish discoloration on the top of his head, even since I got him, but I assumed that was his coloring as he's a little piebald.
