I'm freaking out, I think I'm going to be sick -_- I have no idea how long it's been leaking, it's coming from the back that faces the wall so I didn't see it but the water is a brownish color and it's def coming from the soil I have in the bottom. Idk what to do other than remove everything, I'm just freaking out right now! It's prob ruined the table it's sitting on, which doesn't belong to me, I'm going to have to pay for the damages! I don't have a job -_- omg it's a pretty slow leak, can I just limit the amount of water in the tank until I can move my fish to bowls?
I've moved my tank to my room and set it on a towel, hopefully that SLOW leak won't cause a huge prob, I go back to school in August, I may just put my boys in a simpler, smaller tank or even smaller individual ones when I move. The 10g NPT is nice and all but with my lifestyle of constantly having to move all the time, it's not exactly ideal and was kind of stupid of me. Is there any way I can reseal the bottom of this one? I'd like to keep it regardless but I won't be putting anything in it for a while.
First, deep breaths.
If the tank is 10 gallons or less, run to the kitchen and get some tupperware or that sort of container, big mixing bowls and the like. Wash them and rinse well
Fill them with water and put the fish in - they will be fine there for a day or 3, you'll just have to watch them carefully and do water changes. Don't feed them while they're in there, they'll be fine without eating for a little while.
If it's a bigger tank with more/bigger fish, you might need a 5 gallon bucket (unless you've got an enameled pot, the only safe kind) to fit them.
Once the fish are out, empty the tank and break it down. While doing do, check everything carefully. For example, are you SURE the tank is leaking? Could it be the filter? Examine everything.
Empty the tank completely. Check the damage to the table. It might not be as bad as you fear. If it's an older, wood table, the brown may just be the finish coming up a bit - this can be fixed by you with some know-how (I love google)
If the tank IS leaking, you can fix that too. Seriously. Again, google instructions and silicone is not expensive.
You can fix this but do NOT wait!!! If the tank is leaking, there is a chance the leak could get much worse very suddenly. Think of a dam giving way. Like that. Take care of it right now.
Thanks :O
I have them in their cups right now, so I will move them to something a little bigger, I wiped everything down and I don't feel anything else wet under there so idk where the leak even is, I've taken it to my room and filled it about half way and now I'm watching it, just waiting to see if it really IS leaking. But the water in the tank was clear, the water on the table was gold like it had tannins in it from the soil, so I immediately assumed it was leaking from the bottom. This tank was just purchased in February, if it IS leaking I am going to be pissed.
If you have some tatty old sheet or towel that's light colored, put the tank on that, and then put some food coloring in the tank water.
If you have no food coloring, a packet of kool-aid works too (lol, without the sugar, of course)
Once you've identified the leak, the food coloring will wash right out. The blue and greens are better then the red, which wants to stain the silicone a bit.
:O you're a genius LOL
BUT . . . there are water spots all down the back of the tank just behind the filter -_- nearly gave myself a freakin heart attack and all it was was the filter, and it did damage the table it was on . . . hopefully no one will notice >.>
This is my first tank, lol it's like my first child and it sneezes and I rush to the hospital xD
