So I have a 5 gallon tank. I knew nothing of cycling when I set up my tank. Now I have an idea about what is going on but I am still concerned. My nitrites have been staying at 1ppm for the past 5 days. Even with partial water changes. I fear I may have over cleaned my tank and might have disrupted the cycling. I'm worried about my fish. What steps should I be taking to keep my fish safe and help along the cycle?
You should do at least a 50% water change with nitrites at 1. Retest an hour or so later if they are still >.25 do another 50% water change. Keep testing daily, anytime nitrites (or ammonia) is >.25 do a 50% water change until the cycle process is completed. Nitrites can last 2-3 wks give or take.
Thank you very much for your advice! I am have doing the water changes and keeping the nitrites down. I am starting to see nitrates so hopefully they won't last much longer.
