Hi! So, I wanted to know what to feed my newer betta fish Mr. Jingles. Do they prefer flakes or other things? My Dad is breeding mosquitoes or my betta to eat, but I don't think I should continuously feed my betta mosquitoes. What are the best kinds of betta food? Thanks! :-D
a few others around this site, and i as well, use aqueon betta pellets.
my betta scarfs it right down. c: i wouldn't recommend flakes, since it is
harder to control the amount that you're feeding 'em.
i've also heard that new life spectrum pellets are good too.
it is good to feed them a variety of things like frozen bloodworms or mosquitoes,
so you can feed them those as treats, maybe twice a week? whatever works for you. c:
Aqueon's all right, but its protein level is kind of low. Unless you're willing to be diligent in feeding mosquito larvae or bloodworms, it's best to switch to something like the NLS food. I love using the small fish formula, because the granules are so small there's no risk of choking.
Anyway, there's really no "best food" for bettas. What you want is a varied diet. I feed mine the NLS pellets and frozen bloodworms. Not on the same day, though, because then they end up with huge little bellies.
I've recently found that one of my betta sorority girls, who was constantly bloated/constipated, has had a complete turn-around health-wise, since I've been feeding live flightless fruit flies (once every day or two).
That's why a varied diet is so important... what might be an ideal food for one betta might not work so well for another.
Here's an interesting note on live fruit flies... If you only have one betta (and don't need a jar of 500 fruit flies), PetSmart has little vials of fruit flies and crickets. I think they're marketed as turtle food? Anyhow, if you've only got one betta, these might be a great way to add live food to your betta's diet without getting buried in bugs!
I also feed my bettas the following:
Hikari guppy food (really small pellets... great for young bettas, 4 months+)
Hikari Dehydrated Daphnia
New Life Spectrum betta pellets (they even smell tasty to ME, lol!)
Live baby crickets
Omega One betta buffet (I crush these up as they are rather large)
I vary the foods and keep the amount that goes into the tank tiny... just enough, and no more.
Now I'm hungry... where are those New Life Spectrum Pellets? Mmmm, garlic...
