SO I was out the other day checking all the fish stores as I regularly do when I found one of them got a shipment of Anubias, I have a hard time finding anubias or anacharis around here. I told them I wanted some anubias and they gave me a nice healthy looking plant. YAY! Finally something with nice leaves for my Betta to sleep on.
When I got home I found several small leaves floating in the water with my Anubias. I figured whatever, they'll probably die and feed my shrimp and snail. Boy was I wrong, not only have they survived but now they are growing roots. I have no clue what they are so I figured I would post a picture here and see what you think.
I'm sure if I go to the store and look at their plants I could figure it out but this is more fun and the store is an hour away.
The two on the left don't show roots in this picture but the one on the right you can just make out the root at the bottom.

2. Click on the pic and copy the url adress (it should in in .jpg, .png, something like that)
3. Paste the pic into
Oh, I know how to post pictures. What I did usually works, not sure why it has decided not to today. I tried fixing the post again and if it still doesn't work here is the image shack one.
It looks like some very nice java fern hitchhikers to me, but I don't know. I have seen this growth pattern in java ferns. Very nice plants whatever they are.
Once the roots get longer I intend to anchor them and see how they grow.
I've seen those Javas but as far as I know nobody around here carries them. I mean they barely carry Anubias or Anacharis, two aquarium staples IMO. I can't see them having an uncommon variety of Java. If that is it I'll be happy and maybe start a breeding program to send to everyone here ;-)
I'll be heading to the store at some point in the next couple weeks. If I remember I'll ask them and report back. Until then keep the guesses coming.
It definitely looks like Wisteria, which would make sense considering the roots growing from the cuttings and that they are a fairly common aquarium plant.
I agree, looks like water wisteria....that is one of the ways I propagate mine...first I pinch the top off the mother plant and then pinch the lower leaves off the top I just pinched-plant the top and let all the leaves I just pinched float in the tank until they get some roots in about a week or so and then plant them....I will end up with about 5-8 new plants this way....
If it is Wisteria what kind of care do they need? I've read they require CO2, Iron, Fertz and good lighting. I kind of prefer the low maintenance plants since I don't have the time or money for all those extras.
Would wisteria survive without the extras or should I rid myself of it now before it dies and pollutes the tank?
From what I hear, Wisteria is relatively easy to care for. I think its requirements are similar to anacharis and hornwort, and like them, it grows like a weed.
Easy, easy stem plant.....float or plant...break off a leaf and it will grow roots....fast grower, easy to propagate...nothing special needed....good hitchhiker to get....lol......your biggest problem may be that it grows fast....lol....its a pretty plant too...their stems tend to be brittle and snap easy...but no worries just stick it in the substrate or let it float.....
Yep..Wisteria. I second OFL for it being easy. It's growing better for me in my smaller tanks than the bigger ones..likely due to the light.
It's one of my favourite plants because it is easy to keep, quick growing and quite pretty. I'm actually at the point of throwing my clippings away until I buy more tanks to fill up..lol.
Great find. Let it float and get a really nice root system happening, then plant it and enjoy. I have found it enjoys ferts though. I use root tabs and liquid ferts for it. I've found it stays greener and is a lot less likely to fall apart when it's well fertilized.
Alright, well I will soon (Jan 7th) be upgrading to 10 gallons so it will have all the room it wants to spread, if it so chooses. Sounds like it will be good to put along the center divider (going to divide the 10 into 2 5s).
I found about 6 clippings in total in the bag, we'll see how many grow roots and take to growing. SO far 2 show decent roots and will need to be tied down soon.
With the smaller wisteria leaf with just a few roots- I will put a small piece of gravel or small rock on top of the little root and it will take hold/anchor itself into the soil/substrate...sometimes I even let the leaf float until I get a second leaf growing on it...
Well, they are going to float for at least another week until I get home where my 10 gallon is waiting. I think they get better light while floating anyways.
Thanks for all the advice. As always it is much appreciated.
I've used mine on either side of the divider in my 10 as well! Great spot for it. Along the back works too...it grows up and then over the surface of the water..
Have fun planting your 10!!
