So 4-6 pygmy's would be fine? If I just got 4 normal ones would that stress him to much? would they out grow the 40 liters? Sorry for all the questions.
I would stick with the pygmies. Whilst larger cories, such as bronze, won't die if you chuck them in a 40 litre, they are much larger and do seem confined by the space. Smaller cories (pygmy or panda) will be much better for the size of a 40 litre. This is especially true if it is something like the AquaOne 380, which is cube-shaped rather than rectangular, and has quite a small footprint.
Bear in mind that pygmy and panda cories really do need a sand substrate rather than gravel.
