Ahh, that's why marine biologists (and you and me) are worried about CO2 buildup in the ocean lowering the pH and acidifying the water.
That's it, and the explosive growth of filamentous algae choking the natural ecosystem

I smashed up a bunch of oyster shells and other shells I had and put them in a bag in the filter. At first the water clouded up but then the filter took care of it. I've been having to do water changes daily again, had a nitrite spike yesterday but had company over so I had to wait until they left to do another partial water change at 1am! Who knew that a low pH could screw up my cycle so badly! Thanks to all of you for your advice and informative responses. :)

I have a low pH/kH in my tank upstairs. In fact, with the driftwood and IAL I've added, my pH is practically non-existant. I know this isn't a solution in your case, but I ended up choosing a species that would thrive in my water. :) I have borasas maculata and they are doing really well.
