I have recently suffered the loss of one of my bettas while cycling a three gallon tank. Right as I thought we were out of the woods and things were going well... he died. I'm not sure whether it's my fault or the fault of his previous owner who had never bothered to clean his water over about a period of four months or ever done something to cycle the tank. He was quite weak when I got him.
In any case, I've run tests on the water postmortem and come up with 0.25 ppm ammonia, 0 ppm nitrites, and about 10 ppm nitrates. Is this tank still cycling, is it cycled... or is it some whacko thing in between.
If I want to use the tank again for another fish is it best to try to "keep" the cycle I have or start from scratch?
