ok I'm wondering if warm water changes are ok. I figure if I add a bit of warm water to the mix and let it cool to almost room temperature it might be better than having cool water warm up. Now this is just treated warm tap water not hot, is this ok?
I always do my water changes with water that feels as close to the tank temps (80*F) as possible. I've pretty much got it down to touch. I still make sure the water is at the right temp before adding the fish back though.
I think its really important especially if you don't remove your fish for changes. Putting cold water in during a change will cause a drastic temp drop which isn't good for the fish.
I just put in the temperature of the water that was originally in the tank. After doing it for so long, I can tell what's wrong and right just by touch.
lol...and I've learned not to trust my sense of touch when it comes to the temp! lol
I put the new water under a desk lamp for a little bit, stick in the ol' thermometer, and add it to the aquarium once it's within 2-3 degrees of the rest of the aquarium.
You could buy a thermometer if you're not comfortable with your sense of touch yet. I usually start warmer and wait till it cools, but I more or less have the temperature down by touch. You will too soon, trust me
I was told so long as the temperature of the new water was +/- 2degrees of what the tank is then I wouldn't worry about it.
