Hello, I'm Star, yes, that's my real name. Am I supposed to say that? Humm start over. Hello, I'm Oakly, that's my user name. I'm going to get a Betta fish for my birthday and I think that they are beautiful. I've been lurking in the site without registering for AGES! But now, well, here I am! I really wanted to be able to partake in this brilliant forum, you all seem so nice and knowledgeable! So, yeah. I'm after a male Betta, maybe a crowntail or plackat, I think that how you spell it! I would love to have a blue or red marbled one or even just a single colour blue or red. Anyway, I must have bored you! I'm doing all my re-search before hand so if you have any hints, tips, advice...please share! Thanks for reading! Oh and would a baby bio-orb be okay for a betta, I've heard that it would be but some areas of the world-wide-web are saying that no fish should be kept in a bowl? Why? I don't know! We do call them fish bowls after all...Oh well. Okay, I have officially rambled on now. So I'll be going now. Thanks!
First of all welcome to the site! i have heard a lot of bad things about the biorbs apparently they have bad air curclation or something AND they are quite expensive.
No Tropical fish or any fish really should be kept in bowls because you cannot heat them or get a filter in there so Bowl = unhappy fish. hope that anwsered your questions.
Yup! South west! You? Just seen that I can put a heater in a bio-orb, and found a good priced one...do you think it could work out? They are really nice tanks, at least, thats what I think!
Well, really, it depends what kind of bowl you're using. I have a 2 gallon bowl that I keep one of my boys in w/ a heater (I don't use filters) and he's perfectly fine.
Generally, pet-store bowls are very small (half-gallons to one gallons) and that's a bit small, in my opinion, for a betta. In a small bowl, there isn't much room to swim around in or hide anywhere, really.
I know quite a few people that have biOrbs, though I've never used them myself or read up on them. Bettas are not very strong swimmers, so the circulation of water in a biOrb doesn't really matter unless you change the water as often as you need to. I have twelve tanks (one of them a five gallon) each with a betta inside, and I don't use any filters whatsoever. BiOrbs should be absolutely fine- as long as they're a 2 gallon minimum (some people would say 1 gallon, but that's just my opinion.) Be aware, they are hard to clean! I helped my friend clean out hers and it took a while.
And yes, as weluvbettas has mentioned, they are quite expensive. A regular 2 gallon and up tank would cost less.
Thanks very much. The bio-orb I'm looking at is 4 gallons. I think that's a good size. Maybe I'll look into other tanks that aren't bowl shaped as well. I would probably have the circulation thing turned off and just do regular water changes. Thanks for your help. Do you know what would happen if I did keep the circulation thing on? Thanks again!
Im from the north east of england! dont get your betta from a large chain petstore like pets at home. get your betta from a local fish store because the care about there animals and know a lot more.
Hmmm...... I have a 3 gal. bowl that I keep one of my boys in that has a small internal filter in it AND a 25 watt heater. Some driftwood, a small anubius nana & some floating guppy grass & it's all good!
Would LOVE to show you pictures of it & even took some pics this afternoon, but when I went to download them onto my computer it tells me the USB has malfunctioned!!! Grrrrrrr,,,,,,,,,,,,,, I will try to do something about that over the next few days.
I live in a very small town in a very rural area and found it at the variety store - it was on a lower shelf so God only knows how long it was there. It's an Anchor Hocking, very thick, heavy glass and I paid $10.00 for it. A steal, IMO!
Woah!! That sounds like a great bargain! Maybe I'll keep an eye open on Ebay or something. I'll look out for pics! Grrr, that happens with my camera phone as well!
It WAS a bargain, IMO!! The only thing comparable I could find on Ebay was a 2 gal. drum bowl that would have cost close to $30.00 in the door!!!
Granted, this bowl is not tall like a drum bowl, but much wider. Hmmmm..... will have to measure for fun when I go downstairs (the computer is upstairs & that fish is in the living room downstairs).
