When I went to feed Albatross today, he tried to lunge for the pellet but then jerked off and went hiding, which isn't normal for him. When he came back out, I took a look at him. There's something wrong with his face. It looks like a rather large gash going from his mouth down, and one sore-like thing close to his eye. Actually, the whole right side of his face is looking quite puffy and disfigured.
The decor was the same that he's always had, and I've had it in with other fish before with no problems, and his plants are silk.
Can anyone help me? It does seem very painful, which I think is why he doesn't want to eat. He's mostly been hiding and laying down today.
Here's a picture of it. Sorry that it's blurry, I'll try to take a better one of it later when I come back home:
What I would do is quarantine him and put him in some heated water with a medicinal dose of aquarium salt and BWE, daily water changes ... and hope for the best. I really don't know what else to offer. Poor guy.
oh no! he has the phantom of the opera face! Def put him in QT with warm water and salt for infection. Make sure the wound does not turn into a nasty fungus D:
To update, Albatross is not doing well at all. It's really hard seeing him like this, though is is trying his best. :-(
It looks like he barely has a mouth now. His whole face is quite pale, and he's having a hard time swimming. The first few days he was accepting soaked FD brine shrimp because it was soft, but now he won't eat at all.
I am so sorry to hear about Albatross. I hope he makes it.
I have no idea what that could be. I would say just try to make sure he does not get and infection or fungus while he recovers.
Maybe it is a internal tumor that is finally more visable or some injury inside his mouth?
I don't think it's a tumour. It started out as a gash-type thing across his face, but now his face is just looking like it has very little mouth left. :-(
I'll try to take a picture tomorrow, if he lets me.
Yikes, Could it be that he somehow wounded himself on the hard plastic parts of your silk plants? I see that some of them look like the ones from craft stores, not the ones made specifically for aquarium use... Unless a tank is 100% bare, no tank is truly 100% safe. He could have smashed into something...
Alex, I guess it's a possibility. The second picture does have some plants from the dollar store, but the tank that he was in when I found his face like that was different, and all the plants in that tank were from pet stores.
Your story made me feel very sad. I am so sorry for his loss. At least he didn't suffer for very long.
