Im having trouble finding plants that will survive in my male bettas tank. I hear Amazon swords, crypts, anubias, java fern, java moss, christmas moss are good, iv never tried them though =)
IMO/E-the correct lights and photoperiod are one of the big factors for success with plants in the aquarium.
Depending on your lights and tank size-low-mod light plants 1.5-2wpg, jave moss, java fern, naja grass, water wisteria, vals, sags, crypts, mexican oak leaf to name a few and depending on the tank size swords are good low-mod light plants but can out-grow small tanks pretty fast.
Java moss/fern will grow in just about anything. Anubias are good too. Hornwart, since it's a floating plant, is good for an anchor for bubble nests or just a nice plant. These are some other low-light plants http://www.aquaticplantcentral.com/forumapc/plantfinder/go.php
