So my girlfriend and I are going camping for four days, and got someone to come and feed our three fishies. But he can only come once a day, as it is a fair drive to our place. Will that be enough? And how many pellets should he feed them each? We usually feed them three pellets (omega one betta buffet) twice a day. Just don't want them getting stressed and sick while we're gone...
Yes. Your fish should be fine with food once every day. If you own all bettas then they'll be perfectly fine considering you don't really have to feed them if it's just four days. But anyways I agree with bettacrab. About five pellets should suffice. Have a nice trip!
@Namialus: Why only 1 pellet every other day? I don't want my friend to feel like his 20 minute drive is just for a single 1mm sized pellet per fish, he might feel taken advantage of
Yea, you're good. If you wanted to you could just leave them, four days without food is ok. I just got home from a ten day trip and my fish got 8 NLS every second day... And they are all healthy.
Four days isn't all that long. Like the others said, your fish, assuming they are all bettas(though even if they're not, so long as they're not a particularly sensitive species and they're nice and healthy four days shouldn't be a problem), would even be fine to go those four days without food at all. Personally I don't bother asking anyone to feed my fish unless I'm going to be gone a week or longer...a few days without food won't do any harm.
If you still plan for your friend to come feed them, just tell him to feed 3-4 pellets to each fish. A smaller amount of food, or even none at all, for a few days is much better then risking over-feeding. Also, remember not to feed more then usual before you leave, or when you return! Just feed normally. Like my dad always said, a hungry fish is a happy fish!
Have a nice trip! And don't worry too much, I'm sure your fish will be happy and healthy upon your return.
I do agree with everyone else ^_^ in fact Betta's can survive up to a month without food and I know that from personal experience....(looks to Rembrandt in my avatar and shakes fist at him lol) But if you want, your friend can come every other day so just two days and fee them once about 6-9 pellets and that way they won't produce as much poop either while you're gone which means you won't come home to a very dirty tank, especially if some aren't cycled or anything.
But in conclusion, they will be just fine with or without food for only four days
lol, I don't go by the eye thing, it's not quite right anyway. I feed them once daily and I feed them until their stomach starts to bulge just slightly and that's when they're full. Then they get a whole 24 hours to work off that food and they do! Each fish is different though, one of mine; Jarvis only gets about 5-6 pellets because he's eternally constipated with no help of getting better. While my young PK boy routinely get's about 10 pellets in a day of NLS. Omega I feed less since they are a bigger pellet but NLS is so tiny!
Their stomach may be about the size of their eye, but thats not really a strict, definite way of deciding how much to feed your betta. Its a good way to get some kind of idea of what most bettas can eat, but for most normal healthy bettas in a proper, clean, warm environment you could simply feed a pellet at a time, like lilnaugrim, until their bellies get a little roundish(though I would suggest for most to regularly feed smaller meals twice a day for easier processing and digestion, however some people have their own techniques that work very well for them.). The general amount most, including myself, will recommend of 2-5 pellets or so(depending on the size of both the pellet and the betta)twice a day seems to, in my experience, be enough to fill most betta bellies nicely, but each betta can be a little different.
With that said, I think 6-9 in one sitting may be a tad much. 6 perhaps would be alright, but more then that at one time would be pushing it for most bettas IME/O. Like I mentioned before, its usually best to feed less rather then more, especially in a situation like this when you're leaving someone else to feed your fish; better to have them slightly under-fed for a few days rather then risk potential over-feeding if you ask me.
Oh yeah, I do forget to mention that I do feed one pellet at a time generally.
But I do agree having them under-fed for the few days if he is going to come everyday. That means less bio-load and no chances your Betta can indulge themselves in 15+ pellets lol
I do have to note just my feeding schedule is different for my different aged Betta's as well. The older ones don't get as much (5-7 pellets a day) where the young ones under a year get the 8-10 pellets and then the babies get 2-3 pellets twice or three times a day, sometimes with crushed flakes to substitute depending on their moods lol and then the sorority get's whatever once a day.
