So I am a bit confused about growing new plants and planlets. Do you clip off leaves from a pre existing plant and just keep it in water and fertilize and new plants grow? How do you get new plants from clippings? Is there any special care they need? What plants grow new ones from clippings and which ones don't? I would like to know so I can start growing new plants from my pre existing ones and plant some more tanks.
The rosettes-like, swords, sags, vals, crypts-they send out runners-you can propagate either by laying the runner over and placing something on it to hold it down until it anchors-then clip it or once they have a few roots-clip it from the mother plant and re-plant. My sags, vals, crypt send runners under the soil and when I see a new one poking up where I don't want it-I pull it up to expose where it is attached to the mother plant and clip it-then move. My chain swords, hair grass-usually will send runners across the tank and once they anchor themselves-I may or may not cut them away from the mother plant.
Java fern-once I see roots forming from the baby fern-usually at the tip of a leaf on the mother plant-I will pull it off and use a small stone on just the roots or let it float until it gets more roots or bigger rhizome so I can attach it to something. And sometimes I just let them release and go where ever they want....lol....
Stem plants-take cuttings from the mother plant and re-plant the bare stem or lay something on top of the bare stem until they anchor. The mother plant usually will bush out more sending out side shoots. With water wisteria-when I take cutting from them-I strip the lower leaves from the cutting-I plant that and let the leaves float-usually within a week these leaves will have roots-I usually lay a stone over the tiny roots until they anchor.
I don't use anything fancy to trim my plants-mainly my fingernails...lol...and pinch them from the plant. Even with my jungle vals that can get over 5ft long-I grab a handful and tear the tops off. I will use a razor blade or scissors to cut the woody stems-but only because they are too tough for my fingernails...
