I just got a new betta named enigma and its blue on 1 side and green on the other and im thinking of setting up my ten gallon tank but i was woundering is a beta hardy enough to survive the cycleing because i had to buy a cheap half gallon tank and i want enigma out as soon as possible and hes very active but he has no room and i feel sad so can u or will he die:-?
If you get yourself a good liquid test kit to monitor the progress of the cycle, you should be able to do water changes whenever ammonia or nitrite reach dangerous levels. Bettas are hardy fish, but there's still no guarantee that it will survive the cycle as it definitely places a good deal of stress on the fish. If I were in your situation, I would probably move him to the 10g and just keep up with the water changes whenever ammonia or nitrite hits 0.5 ppm. The tank may take a while to cycle, but he will probably be better off than he would in that tiny bowl.
You shouldn't have much trouble cycling a 10 gallon tank with your betta. They are less dependent on their gills since they also breath atmospheric air, so poor water quality doesn't bother them as much as other fish (hence the reason they can survive so long in little cups and tiny bowls). They key word I use is survive, as they will not thrive in poor water quality, as wouldn't any other fish, but the ammonia levels would have to get quite high to cause any real damage. Just keep a close eye on your water parameters and do a water change if it gets bad. Also, try to feed minimally, a couple pellets every other day to keep waste down.
Thanks if fact im probably gona start the tank in an hour or so it the little tank had a bacterial bloom last night and it was a pain in the butt to clean and keep him un stressed
