Ive been lurking in the betta forum for a few days now and must say you guys have inspired me . Im going to pick up a 28L (6 -7 gallon) tank 2moro, an Aqua one Aquastart, and Ive ordered a mini heater and filter from Ebay. I want to do a planted tank with sand and gravel, bog wood with Java moss and fern and perhaps a few other low maintanance plants.
Im just wondering what it would be able to hold in the way of tank mates. I was thinking something like -
- betta
- 1 or 2 otto's
- couple of shrimp (cherry or bumblebee) maybe 3 in total
think this would be over stocked ? all my other tanks are quite big so Ive always had room to play around with my stock list, I think smaller tanks are harder to do
Set up the tank with plants and decor today, just waiting on mini filter and heater arriving in the post :-D
What do you think so far ?
Its still a bit cloudy from digging around in the sand, I might add a bit more sand round the front since you cant see it very well (too many rocks :roll.
Very nice.......I would wait at least 6-8 weeks or longer to add the otos, they tend to do better in a tank that has some age and algae/diatoms, also these guys are social and tend to do best in groups.
The tanks is 6-7g and has live plants and 1 Betta, IMO-I would add at least 4 otos and a few shrimp and then I would call it stocked....
Love your tank...nice job!
I wasnt sure I'd get away with that many ottos, I had read that they like to be in grps thats why I thought 2 but 4 would be lovely
And yep planning on waiting a while before adding them they seem to be quite sensitive little fishes and adding them to a brand new set up wouldnt do them any good. The gravel and a few rocks are from my big tank so hopefully it should cycle a little quicker
Really nice! Eventually the gravel will mix with the sand and you won't be able to see them. But it's lovely. I actually had 2 ottos, but one died/disappeared and I haven't replaced it yet. My one that's left is pretty shy. I read somewhere that a lot of ottos will die in the first week, but if they live past that they'll live a long time (apparently petstores don't feed them right and they're all wild caught).
Anyway, sorry for the long post and keep us updated with pics!
I worried about the sand and gravel mixing, you cant see it very well but Ive made a kinda terrace with the stones and wood that the sand sits behind, the layer of gravel is quite thin too so that should help. Failing that I have a 40L bucket full of washed sand to replace any I loose lol.
Yes Ottos feed on specific algae and diatomes, when they are in the lfs they dont have the same food as they are used to or when they are first put into our tanks, if they dont adapt fast enough they die :-( but if they do learn to eat the algae in your tank and also algae wafers or cucumber they will survive.
I'm a big believer in under stocking. It just seems less stressful on the fish & easier on me.
