Before bringing home our new cat my husband and I wanted to make sure that Gilgamesh did not suffer any harm. We looked at relocating the tank but none of the available places were feasible.
Here is the solution that has worked for us. I took jewelry wire and attached a hook to one end. I bent the other end into a loop and made sure that the length fit securely around the aquarium. The hook allows me to open the tank easily for feeding Gilgamesh.
So far it has worked great so I thought I would share. We have even set up the recliner next to the tank to be a lounge for our cat, Leonidas, so he and Gilgamesh can safely observe each other. They both seem to find the other guy pretty interesting.
