I have two bettas that are ill, one has SBD, the other has popeye. im treating both of them with epsom salt, 1 tsp per gallon. Yesterday i added some crushed IAL to a gallon of water so it could soak and release some tannins.... today i poured the water into their qt tanks.... and its yellow. like.. apple juice yellow. ive never used IAL before, just wondering if this is normal and safe for my fish. also the water was a little hot when i added the IAL, could this be the reason why?
I think the tannins from the IAL is in the water now. Tannins usually change the color of the water. I'm not sure why the water's hot, though. You got me on that one. :I I hope your Betta Fish get better.
Oh i meant that i took hot tap water and added the IAL without waiting for it to cool down, sorry that wasnt clear haha. And i was just worried because i thought IAL was supposed to turn it brown, not gatorade yellow
I would premix your treatment water in a 1gal jug of dechlorinated water to use for 50% daily water changes while you have them in QT-after you properly acclimate to the new chemistry with 25% every 15min for 1 hour on the first day...and increase the Epsom salt to 2tsp/gal...add 1 crushed IAL per gallon to steep for at least 30min before use...Shake well....
Usually the IAL turn the water more amber colored-Oak leaf will turn it yellow at first then brownish......
How long did you let the IAL steep.....the longer they steep the more tannins released the darker the water....Also, don't use water over 110F since the heat can destroy the antibacterial/fungal properties.....
Wow...20 hours...it should have been more of an amber color by then....try another one in a glass of dechlorinated water and let it steep and see if that one is a different color....
I would premix it in a 1gal jug of dechlorinated water....this way by using the premixed Epsom salt water you will provide the proper dosage when you make 50% water changes...plus it will dissolve and you can keep the tannin source steeping....
okay, just a little extra info their qt tanks are shoe box sized sterilite tubs filled up halfway, so each fish gets half a gallon. each of them gets a small heater which is keeping it at a steady 80 degrees. only one of them has been eating, neither have been pooping
well.... 24 hrs later, the new batch is still yellow. i decided to put them in the water, it dosent seem to be doing them any harm, theyre actually way more active today any ideas on when this popeye will go down though? hes had it for 3 weeks, i already tried maracyn and stopped the treatment, he seems to be getting better, almost normal aside from how his eye looks like its about to fall out
Is it just one eye....if so it most likely is due to an injury and they can take up to 2 or more week to heal....and its not uncommon for the eye to fall out either....
Okay, just to recap, i am going continue with the epsom salt treatment for both of them until Friday, because i started it last friday, at the rate of 2 tsp per gallon. both of them are acting completely fine now, swimming around, eating normally (although the male CT is a little shy and hides behind the heater or under a leaf whenever i come into the room). Also, do you think whatever caused the popeye could still be contagious? he was a rescue from petsmart, so he hasnt had a tank of his own at my house... i plan on putting him in the 10 gallon tank that the female CT was in, as well as a few more females that i will be buying today, would there be any risk of the disease spreading?
well it was both eyes when i got him, one of them has gone down to almost normal, the other is still bulging out like it was when i first got him, here is a picture from 2 weeks ago, ill try to get one today
I would keep him in QT for at least 3 weeks even after his eyes have healed-This can be anything or size tank after the treatment-you just don't want him to be in the same water/tank with any other fish to be on the safe side.....
