So I'm having a bit of a weird problem over here...
I "rescued" a couple of female betta fish from wal-mart about a week ago, and they've been doing great. except for one thing... yesterday evening I discovered a bubble nest in Tifa's tank. And as far as I've read, only males do that.
So my red flag went up.
I'm under the suspicion that my little girl is actually a short finned male.
I should also note she is just as aggressive (if not more) than my male, Winston.
Also I searched and searched for "her" ovipositor and I see a small grey spot that MIGHT be it, but it looks nothing like my other female's.
I've read that in some cases there are domesticated males that develop shorter fins.
Are there any other ways I can tell the difference?
I need some experienced betta owners to help me out here!
Thanks so much!
Walmart very commonly. Carries. Male plakats (short finned. Males) and labels them as females some females do nest very rare and they don't have the same saliva as the males so the nests. Tend to be small and I guess you can say poorly made
Sounds like walmart, lol.
Anyway I found the small circular nest in the middle of the tank, which i've never seen my male do. he's smart enough to put it in a corner or on the side.
I'll have to put up pictures once I get the chance.
Thank you!
Yup, females make bubblenests also. It's a huge misconception that females are more docile than males, they can be even more aggressive than males. What size tank are the two females in? For female sororities you should have 4-6 females in at least a 10G tank. With only two females in there, one will attack the other one until it kills her. With three females, two of the females will gang up on one, than with two left, one will attack the other. They are VERY territorial fish...hence the name "fighting fish".
At the moment they're sharing a smaller tank with a divider, just for a few days until I get paid and can afford to buy them both bigger ones. I don't have the room for a sorority just yet, but someday...
Oh ok. As long as they have the divider so they can't get at each other that's good. Could you take a picture of her? Some of the breeders can help you with distinguishing if she's a male or female.
Tifa still going at it... Nina gave up. Because fortunately she knows better than to fight through a plastic divider.
She's mad at me now. I had to put her in a brighter light since I had to
use my cell phone. The change of scenery agitated her lol.
They're not quality photos by any means but I did my best!
Can't wait to get them bigger tanks.
Anyway I hope these help a little, I know they're really out of focus, but maybe sometime soon I'll find my camera charger and my pics wont suck.
Alright then! "He" (I guess, haha) is a very pretty fish in person, I wish I could get some decent IN FOCUS pictures out to you all.
Thanks so much for helping me out!
I think a more masculine name than "Tifa" is in order here... Suggestions?
