"King" is just Petco's fancy marketing term for half giant plakats. Giant bettas are about 7" long, the original stock for this line was probably a giant and a regular sized betta, which resulted in the 3.5" half giants. All of the ones I've seen have been plakats.
I just adopted a King, he'll be arriving tomorrow if everything goes according to plan. Here's an article on Giants.. I don't think they get 7" long.. but it would be cool if they did. Giants usually are about 3-3.5" in body length and "thicker" bodied than your average betta. I think the average king is like 2-2.5" in body length.
King Bettas are what 1f2f and adastra said.
I have a two King bettas. One is about 3" and the other is about 2.5".
