Zircon (my crowntail) 's stomach is huge, and swollen. He can't swim properly and is floating at the top. It looks really bad.
I've been feeding him freeze dried bloodworms for the last few days cause i ran out of pellets :$ and he always looked a little bloated after, like he wasnt able to swim. So i hurried out and got pellets (betta bites) by HBH and fed about 3 to him yesterday. He looked fine all night but in the morning his stomach was extremely big.
Help! none of my other fish have this problem .
The freeze dried bloodworms are an occasional treat, or else it could cause bloating and possible SBD (swim bladder disorder). Also, when pellets soak up water, they tend to expand, so they probably expanded in his stomach, adding on to the bloat. I'd fast him for maybe 2 days and epsom salt, 1 tsp per gal.
No, it's unlikely that he'll die, and AQ salt will not work, only additive-free Epsom salt. Should be found anywhere really, it's like a bath salt, but get one thats as pure as possible.
No not at all! But it just makes it hard for them to swim properly.. and yeah as bettafish15 said, try to get the purest epsom salt, unscented. It is found everywhere; I picked mine up at CVS, although I see it at Target, Walmart, etc... maybe even grocery stores.
It's quite simple actually. My betta had the same problem once.
Here is what you have to do:
- use 1 tsp per gal along with daily 100% water changes until symptoms are gone
- the treatment should last no longer than 10 days
- do not feed him for the first 3 days of the treatment
- after 3 days feed him a very small amount twice a day, every other day
- its best to use a water heater in the process because some bettas need warm water to help get rid of the bloating
Do not feed Freeze-dried blood worms that often. Only as a treat. It can cause problems. And Swim Bladder can be fatal. Bloat almost never is.
