I've finally made up my mind about putting together a sorority. I plan on doing a NPT with my spare 10 gallon, but I was curious as to what other tank mates I could have.
I would love to get a small school of tetras. I was thinking Rummy Nose, but I have no experience with them.
If you want mates for your beta...don't choose any fish smaller than your fish because they are very aggressive with smaller fish..even with there own kind. Choose a fish slighty bigger than your betta that way your betta gets the message
Eh, this really isn't true. Many fish larger than a betta are actually decidedly poor tankmates -- size honestly really has little to do with compatibility.
Pygmy and dwarf corys are quite tiny and make great betta tankmates in schools of 6 or more, and the vast majority of bettas will completely ignore them as long as you have a decent sized shoal. Larger corys work well too, as well as otos. African dwarf frogs are itty bitty and work well too, ideally with 2 or more froggies. Only issue with adf frogs is that they're rather shy eaters, which can lead to a piggy betta eating all their food before they venture out to get it, but you can get around it with careful feeding. You can also do snails, but I'm not a big snail fan so I can't comment there.
OP - neon tetras can work, but be aware they can be nippy. Female bettas are probably decidedly less tempting than the long, flowing fins of a halfmoon male, but its something to look out for so you can separate them if they start harassing your girls too much.
I've had tetras with a betta before. It worked out well for around seven months, but then he flipped and started eating them! Are other types of tetras less nippy?
Yeah, I'd heard that before. I haven't considered rasboras because it was to my understanding that they're also pretty nippy! I'll have to look into them. Thanks!
harlequins are pretty timid, i'd be impressed if they had the gall to nip at a betta, tbh! They also dont have teeth like tetras, so even if they do nip they can't do much.
They are not in the same family as piranhas, the family that piranhas come from is from Central and south america. The family that bettas come from is located in the Indian ocean.
Look up Celestial Pearl Danios, they make ideal tank mates. They do well in tropical water temperatures, get about an inch long at the very most, and they are beautiful. They are shy fish that are more comfortable in large groups and they have a relatively low bio-load. They can be hard to get a hold of cheaply though, LiveAquaria has them and there may be some sellers on Aquabid.
