If I were you I would get the 2.5 gallon kit and put a male or female betta in it. I would also advise you put a small heater in there and stuff to keep your fish entertained because it might get bored or unhappy in a space that small.

I have a double dorm room as a single. I had two one gallon bowls for a year before my roommate moved out. A month ago I upgraded to two two and a half gallon tanks on either side of the room. They don't have filters but they do have heaters and enough decorations to keep happy. They really are fine and I'm going into my third year (oh goodness Im old). You should be fine. :)

Petco pet keepers work well - just make sure you are getting the larger sized one - and the ones in the reptile section are cheaper for some reason

2.5 gallon? I feel like going to look through junk at home and seeing if I kept any 10g or less tanks....

Only kept the 50g with everything... hmm.
I was looking at Petsmart today and they have good set ups on sale with heaters. Even their male fish were onsale for $1.99, some were wicked gorgeous.

Petco had a sale on $40 10gal tanks with hood/heater. You'll just need all the stuff in the center.
