Siphon help

Anyone have any recommendation for a gravel siphon for a smaller tank (Fluval 2 gallon)?

What works best? Any advice?

Thanks for your help.

Turkey baster, cheap, effective and small. It works really well in smaller tanks with a relatively smaller foot print aswell. I would recommend it for your tank, they work quite well

I use a Top Fin brand siphon rated for up to 10-gallons with my small tanks (and a turkey baster to spot clean with bare-bottom tanks). Personally, I can't imagine doing water changes on a one-gallon+ tank using a turkey baster, but it seems to work well enough for a fair number of people.

Thought that this was cleaning the bottom of the tank. If I knew that it was for absolutely doing the water changes then I would also recommend one of the top fin brand rated up to 10 gallons. I personally use them also on my smaller tanks and they are great

I always tend to assume people are referring to water changes as well when they ask about siphons/gravel vacs. Maybe it's an inaccurate assumption at times, but I know at least at work that's why people are usually asking.

Haha, I had always wondered how people had the patience to do water changes in more than a half-gallon with turkey basters! I guess now I know: they don't.

I just bought the Top Fin on sale but haven't had the chance to use it yet. Good to know it works!

Thanks for the info.. I think I'll start with a kitchen siphon first and see how that works.

Get a one-inch diameter pill bottle and six feet of 3/8 inch outside diameter neoprene tubing (from the hardware store @ 10 cents/foot). Drill, cut or melt a hole in the bottom along the edge big enough for a tight fit on the tubing (it doesn't need to be airtight). Stick the tubiong about 1/4 in into the hole

Find a 1/4 in dowel or chopstick or plastic stick (from a coat hanger, maybe) and tape it along the side of the pill bottle and, up higher, to the tubing.

This combination has served me well in siphoning and vacuuming my small tanks. Strong enough suction to lift mulm and debris from the gravel without clogging. Fast enough to siphon water changes in anything up to 5gal. Soft enough not to tear up plants nor to endanger nor frighten the fish.

I promise, someday I'll take pictures and make an info thread. Btw, this basic idea was originally posted here by Old Fish Lady. I just refined the sizes to suit my application.
