Unhappy Need advice ASAP as to why my betta is crashing!

I had my crowntail (Zazoo) in my 55-gallon community tank for a couple months, and he appeared to be doing okay with everyone. But recently, I noticed he was starting to get really bloated from eating too many of the regular tropical fish flakes that I was feeding everyone else. And I would try to separate him and make sure he only ate his betta pellets, but it was just becoming too much of a hassle. So I went out and got him his own 5.5-gallon and moved him into there a week ago. And ever since then, he hasn't been looking good. He was fine and active for the first couple days, but lately he's been looking really droopy and lethargic and always either hanging near the top gulping air or lying on top of his alien skull head and appearing to gasp. And I had the water in the 5.5-gallon at the same temp. as the community tank; only difference was the lack of a filter. So I just now acclimated him back into the big tank, and he's instantly more active and less droopy. Still appears to be hanging near the surface and gasping, though. And I just wanna know what happened and if he's gonna be okay...? I really don't wanna lose him. =(

I'm so sorry to hear that. =( I know how agonizing it is to watch them suffer and feel so helpless. I tried adding more BettaPlus to his tank, too, to see if that would help and it didn't. I don't really have anything for medication except some aquarium salt, but I don't even know what I should be treating him for. I really hope neither of us has to say goodbye to our bettas.

I'm basically having the exact same problems and have no idea what to do! I moved mine from a 5 gallon to a 20 gallon community tank and he was doing great for a while, but just recently started either floating at the top or sitting at the very bottom inside his special log he loves. And he doesn't seem to want to eat a lot either. I don't know what to do!

How often do you change the water and how much?

Gasping for air at the surface and/or laying on the bottom being lethargic are signs of ammonia issues.

Do you notice any red streaking on the fins or body or red/purple gills?
If you guys have an ammonia test kit, can you test the water and post the results?

It could be a number of other things but a water quality issues is what pops into mind first. I would suggest a water change to rule out water quality issues. However for a 55 gallon tank, not sure how much that would be.

Baily- what do you feed him and how much? how big is your tank? last water change?

For the ones with the betta in the community tank - are the other fish acting ok?

Are these new tanks that have just been set up with a filter running? Or have you guys had them for a number of months? What I'm wanting to know is - have the tanks finished the nitrogen cycle if you have filters in them.

EDIT: If you all could answer these, that would be a big help:
Housing
What size is your tank?
What temperature is your tank?
Does your tank have a filter?
Does your tank have an air stone or other type of aeration?
Is your tank heated?
What tank mates does your betta fish live with?

Food
What type of food do you feed your betta fish?
How often do you feed your betta fish?

Maintenance

How often do you perform a water change?
What percentage of the water do you change when you perform a water change?
What type of additives do you add to the water when you perform a water change?

Water Parameters:
Have you tested your water? If so, what are the following parameters?

Ammonia:
Nitrite:
Nitrate:
pH:
Hardness:
Alkalinity:

Symptoms and Treatment
How has your betta fish's appearance changed?
How has your betta fish's behavior changed?
When did you start noticing the symptoms?
Have you started treating your fish? If so, how?
Does your fish have any history of being ill?
How old is your fish (approximately)?

Sorry.. I just noticed the "Sticky" explaining all the questions to answer when seeking help. But since moving Zazoo back into the community tank last night, he's having no more issues. It was almost like he was just lonely and depressed. Which is weird. I thought bettas preferred to be alone..? But at least he's fine now! I guess it could have been a water issue, but he was only in the new tank 5 days, so I hadn't performed any water changes yet.
