PLEASE help little Ika :(

Hi everyone, I'm really looking for some guidence in this, I've spent three long days researching, and I'm a bit stumped.

My little Betta (Ika) has recently gotten really sick and I'm not seeing much improvement.

Symptoms are : laying on the bottom of the tank, looks like he has no energy, darts to the top for air, darts back down and falls to laying on his side often with head pointing up. Gills sometimes 'breathing' heavily, little bits under gills popping out when this occurs. Not eating very much (has had a tiny bit of pea in the last couple of days). Darts about sometimes, looking stressed. Recently, VERY faint cloudy patches appearing on his back.

I can't tell if he's pooping or not.

So far, I have bit him in a heated isolation tank with a little aquarium salt and no gravel. Don't see a huge improvement.

I was convinced it was swim bladder, then I thought it was internal parasites, and now I'm worried it might be bacterial!?!

I'm really stumped and I'd be so gutted if we lose him. Please, any advice would be wonderful.

Thanks on behalf of Ika.

I am not an expert but:
1. Don't feed bettas peas as this can make them more bloated. Daphnia is advised as this will help them poop.

2. Please fill out form at the top of this forum section in the sticky section...this will help us give better advice.

3. In the meantime, please read stickies by darkmoon on betta illnesses and treatments...it might ring a bell...I am going to look it over and see if anything matches...

I don't want to scare you, but with the gray patches...or cloudy patches...it could be columnaris or slime coat disease....it could still be bacterial infection....I forgot what slime coat disease treatment said, but for bacterial infection or columnaris, the conservative treatment is aquarium salt, 100% daily water changes for no more than 10days. If conservative treatment fails or betta gets worse, move onto meds.

Found this info in second sticky on betta illness treatments.

Very important: if there is a possibility that its columnaris (you'd know by the description of patches I think) do not increase water temp as it thrives in temps around 85degreesF.

Thanks so much. The patches on him are so faint, and the other symptoms have been around for a week and are getting worse, that I wonder if I just never noticed the patches. From what I've read about columnaris, the first thing I would notice is the patches, and the other symptoms are not associated with this? I really appreciate your feedback, I will lower the temp a tiny bit. It's so hard trying to distinguish one illness from the other! :(

Thanks again, much appreciated.

Isn't it! Sometimes they are sound similar.

Do fill out the form for this thread and maybe PM Old Fish Lady or Tikibirds....they both know a heck of a lot more than me.

Glad it doesn't fit columnaris. Possibly internal infection, but is it bacterial or parasitic? Has he pooped lately? Is it white/gray and stringy? If so, parasite...if he hasn't lately, I am lost. :(

Sorry I haven't been much help. My good and hopeful thoughts go out to you and Ika.
