Hortwort going crazy?

I bought 2 hornworts 2 weeks ago and they were fine. But one just died cause the filter kept sucking it in, the whole tank was full of the little pine like things. I cleaned them up, the other one seems to be fine but it looks like it shed a lot of its things too, but it looks healthy. Am I doing something wrong here? Should I just replace the plants? Which ones would you recommend?

Hornwort is actually a kinda finicky plant. It needs a pretty good light and hard water to really thrive. Dropping of needles is generally a sign it isn't doing well. I've also found they have a hard time adjusting to the warm water of betta tanks as I tried to move some from my goldfish tank (72F) to a cycling betta tank (80F), and it shed all of its needles which just ended up creating more ammonia. I'm still dealing with the algae bloom that happened as a result of that.

If it is giving you trouble, I would just get an anubias. Those things are practically impossible to kill. Just don't bury the rhizome in the substrate; only bury the roots.

Hornwort can go through an adjustment period where it will lose a lot of needles when added to a new aquarium. If it isn't turning brown I would keep it.

Odd...mine doesn't shed in 1.5wpg, very soft water, 80F. I leave it floating and it grows like a weed.

Another great plant is java fern. I love the stuff.
