Hehe yeah the lid is pretty easy take off, it's like those Lock N Lock tupperwares. :) I would think so yeah, 50 watts may be too much, but, if it's a pre-set heater turning it down a lot would work. Just have a thermometer to check it just in-case.

I use sterelite storage containers. They come in various sizes and if you are looking for the bigger ones, they are a lot cheaper then a glass tank. The only bad thing is, the more water it hold, the more the sides tend to bow out a bit.

50 watts in an 8 gallon should be OK. I use a 50 watt pre-set in my 5 gallon. :$

I thought it might bow out a bit too, potentially crack with the pressure. I might pick one up from the 1 shop and fill it with water over night and see how it goes (without a fish in it ofc). Worth looking into. Always handy to have a back up if something goes wrong. I buy my tanks at bargain prices online and at carboots anyway. I like second hand cause they usually come with everything for under 40. Payed 2 for my 8gal at a carboot sale!
