The sudden change in hardness, pH, and most likely some salt, the answer would be yes :( that is just too many huge changes for him to safely live in for long.

Airline tubing works good for small tanks, it is so small though I would just clean it out by hand though.

well best thing to do then is to empty the water into a bucket, scope out as much sand as possible. pour some water back in and then use the siphon hose

Or you can just take out the rest of the decor and water, then go and wash the tank clean with a garden hose or something. should be easier to do this for a small tank like a 3 G.

Don't keep the tank water, it is now unsuitable for betta now.

Shouldn't effect the denitrifying ability of the tank much as you are keeping
the decor.

Generally, the packaged ones at the petshop are dead sand. As live sand is rather hard to store and expensive.......................

I got it at petsmart. They called it Carribean Live Sand. Let me see if I can find it online.

0.o it is Live sand....its like 3 times more expensive then dead sand................

the pet shop definitively have made a quick buck out of you.

Live sand becomes dead sand in freshwater, so essentially you would have placed the betta into a ammonia bath.

what kind of fish attendant is that to sell live sand for a fresh water aquarium. .............

I reckon you can file a complaint, and get some extra goodies for compensation ;)

Thank god your betta isn't in the tank!!

I would defenitely take your receipt and complain. Hopefully they can refund your money. I don't trust anything a pet store worker says, unless it is about where in the store an item is located.

I am not sure what time it is where you are... But if it is late like where I am, I would just put clean water in your betta's tank, place him in there for the night, then remove him tomorrow when you put in gravel. Good luck!
