What colour type is he?

Is he cambodian or Piebald?

His body has darkened since being home and his face is still very white. What I thought was marbling was his colour getting darker after being put in a bigger tank. His body is near the same colour as his tail and fins now.

Neither piebald or cambodian lol.......A lavender Betta is genetically a Cambodian Betta with extended Red and a layer of light iridescent blue-green.
So yes you are very close to being correct.

Great source Ethan. Makes for some interesting reading. So he's somewhat unique? Amazing what you can find at an LFS. He has started to develope white tips to his tail and fins now too. Amazing how much a fish can change given the right water and tempretures.

Haha yes I have found that to be the case with many LFS. Sometimes after a week or two my bettas have completely changed different colors........and that means they are marbles

I believe with your case though he is certainly a (Lavendar)
Very unique he is :D I haven't seen any bettas like him in my fish stores for awhile!

They tend to sell a lot of blues and reds veil tails but when you go when they have new stock they always have an oddball or a really unique betta that if you're lucky you can snap up. They are always well looked after though. I never see one in dirty water or with tatty fins. They keep them in barracks and not cups :D
