Best Way to Prepare a 13-yr-old for a Betta?

I am very close to a young girl having her "tree of life" Bat Mitzvah tomorrow, and I was thinking instead of giving her money, I would give her life. :) She is an animal activist and complete enthusiast of all kinds of pets, as well as an animal rescuer. If she knew about the conditions Bettas are kept in and how they are abused, I'm sure she would have jumped on the bandwagon a long time ago - but like most people, she has no idea.

I was thinking of rescuing a Betta in her honor today, getting her a tank and all the essentials, and then filling a binder with information about how to take care of him, as well as information on how she has made a difference in his life by being his new owner and about general Betta abuse to educate the youth.

I'd then come to her house the day after the party and set up the tank for her and show her how to do water changes and feed him, etc.

I'd also like to include some fun facts in her binder! Any ideas? Anything I'm missing? Please give your advice!

This sounds wonderful. I'd be delighted if I was her!
If she's a huge animal lover like you say I'm sure she'll take great care of a little betta!

Facebook
This page has lots of betta fun facts that you could put in the binder.
Maybe also talk about different betta types with some photos? Veil tail, half moon, double tail, plakat.. To show her how varied they are.

I'm about her age and she has a personality similar to me. I think you got everything down.

You could do a page on why betta are so abused- they're tough little airbreathers.. Maybe something on where betta come from, some photos of wild betta that show how much they've changed.

If you know anything about the nitrogen cycle you can add that in, it helps with new aquarium owners understand water quality.
Cycle information

And plants, there is lots of information about plants and how they benefit the water and decorate your tank.
Plant information

There are a ton more plants that you can explore than just the ones listed in that link. Old Fish Lady is a master when it comes to Naturally planted tanks.
