Betta tanks and wooden furniture

I was thinking of putting the Petco bookshelf case on the dresser in my bedroom. This is a *nice* piece of oak furniture. My biggest fear is that this will lead to damage on the finish of my dresser. I could certainly put a waterproof mat under it, but would that be enough protection?

Anyone have any of their tanks on wooden surfaces? Any advice or thoughts?

I have my tank on a glass surface, I just put a towel down. Even the padding that goes in kitchen cabinets would probably work.
