Vibrations?

I moved my betta to a 5 gallon tank yesterday (formerly in a 3 gallon) and he's pretty happy. My whisper filter is extremely quiet, but today I put my ear up to the tank and the filter makes small, but kind of loud vibrations! My betta seems to be fine and never has any problems, but I was wondering, can betta fish hear vibrations or sounds, and if they can, are they bothered by loud ones or not?
Also, what amount of temperature change can harm a betta? Like if it changes 2 degrees higher or lower, can it bring stress to the fish?

Most, if not all, hang on filters will cause noise/vibrations. Though, have yet to ever had it stress out a fish. Yes, they can feel vibrations in the water, but they always feel them.. it's a way of "seeing" further out and awareness of other fish in the area that could harm them.
I wouldn't worry about the vibrations/noise from the filter - it's normal and it shouldn't cause any bother to the fish.

One or two degrees is fine.. much more than that you are risking putting them into shock. Temps going up and down constantly is also harmful.

A heater will avoid those fluctuations, and using one of those glass in-tank thermometers when filling up the bucket of water for water changes will also help avoid sudden changes.

Thanks Myates! I have a Hydor 25w heater and sometimes it goes from 78 to 79 degrees.

Ah.. that is fine. It works like our thermostat/heater/air in our homes. It takes the water to dip down a bit before it kicks on.. and sometimes it warms it a bit over what the thermostat is set at. That is normal and won't harm your betta. And if that is him in your avatar, he is very pretty :)
