Changing filter cartridge

I had to change the filter cartridge in my 29 gallon. Is it going to go through another cycle?

If it's just Dirty, you could just wash it with Aquarium Water.
But otherwise, yes it is. It's going to have to get MORE Beneficial Bacteria in the Filter. Get some Test Kits!!!

Well, from what I understand, if you get a brand new one it will go through a new cycle. But if you still have the old filter and it still has bacteria on it, you can place a good sized piece of it in the filter as well so that the other brand new cartridge can develop the bacteria a lot faster than it would starting on its own from scratch.... And like Lebron said, if it's just mildly dirty you can rinse it in tank water; chlorine will kill the bacteria, so on the off chance you didn't know that already then heads up!

I did rinse it out for the past 4 months. The carbon started to come out through the top, and it was so dirty so I had to change it.

My filter has the white floss inserts which I add carbon to.

Also in the filter is the black pad that permanently stays in.


When I change the floss insert with a new one and new carbon, the permanent black pad is there to make sure enough beneficial bacteria remains.

I added old carbon to the filter intake. Hopefully it works.
