Well, from what I understand, if you get a brand new one it will go through a new cycle. But if you still have the old filter and it still has bacteria on it, you can place a good sized piece of it in the filter as well so that the other brand new cartridge can develop the bacteria a lot faster than it would starting on its own from scratch.... And like Lebron said, if it's just mildly dirty you can rinse it in tank water; chlorine will kill the bacteria, so on the off chance you didn't know that already then heads up!
