5 Day Vacation...

Okay. Here's my question. Can Betta Fish survive 5 Days without Food?
I've heard that they can survive a week, but I'm not sure if that's true.
It's just that I'm having a Vacation in the Future, and I don't want him to starve. He's a little Piggy of mine and means the World to me. Oh, and I'll also do a Water Change the Day before just in case. Do I still need a Vacation Feeder? Or, should I not waste my money, ( I've seen bad reviews ) and they can survive? Any Comments or Suggestions would be Appreciated.
Thanks!!! :)

Im not sure about the five day thing, but I would not get those feeder things. They are just a scam. The fish don't eat them and its just gonna increase nitrite and ammonia problems.

Trust me. Fish can go 5 days without food. They have different metabolic needs than mammals. He'll be fine. Those vacation feeders are a waste of money and dangerous to your fish as they cause ammonia spikes.

I get more worried about fin-biting than I do starving when I go away.

5 days should be fine. Usually for shipping it's 2 days fasting before transit, and then at least 3 days in transit without food. Show fish will go even longer as they don't get fed during the show (2-3 days) and then another three in transit back. Just to be safe feed them a little extra so they have a healthy pudge before you go.

I wouldn't worry about it. I left Friday morning and came home on Tuesday afternoon, he was fine. I just did a big water change before I left. (around a 50% change)

Try to avoid asking family members to feed the fish for you... when I did that, I came back to an empty pot of food, and 100s of flakes rotting away in the tank, and a dead Betta. So now whenever I go on holiday I lock the fish food away!

I know I went out of town for 4 days just recently and had my pet sitters watching the herd...I WISH I would have told them not to feed the betta. They felt bad for him, overfed him, and I came home to high ammonia, nitrites and nitrates. Four daily 50%-70% partial water changes later and I'm still in the purple with the nitrites. I have the water setting out for a 100% change tomorrow.

The best thing to do if you have to leave your fish in the care of someone else is to put just enough in a baggy or something and lock the rest of the food up.
