this is my first betta and I heard that they like live plants, are there any kind in particular to get?

Floating plants are always good for bettas. Not only to they provide cover, but they also serve as an anchor to the betta's bubble nest. Examples are elodea and anachris. Just drop 'em in the tank. Elodea also performs the function of a filter since it is a "leaf feeder". It is easy to care for and competes with algae for nutrients thus keeping the algae in check.

I heard that as well. For my betta, i have three plastic plants clumped together in a mini jungle type of thing. He loves it. If you have the time and money to care for live plants, they love java moss and java ferns. If you do go with fake plants though, perform the pantyhose test before putting it in the tank. All you have to do is run the plant along the pantyhoe and if it snags it isnt safe for you little betta.
