Filter hole thingy removal? (Aqueon kits)

Kayso, today I finally bought the ten gallon for the sorority. It's the Aqueon deluxe kit, so it came with a heater (adjustable), net, and thermo-sticker, along with the filter, a fluorescent light hood, and other baubles.
When you install the filter and hood, there's a perforated indent-type thing on the back of the hood that's perfect for the filter, and the directions say I am simply meant to just cut it off the hood.
But HOW? I tried a box-opener and normal scissors, which is really all I have access to. Anybody else have/had this problem that can help me with a solution?

I bent mine until it snapped off. It's that piece of plastic that has some parts still stuck to the actual tank right? It took me a while to stop worrying it would damage the hood lol.

I agree with Sena. I was worried I'd hurt the hood--but finally just gave up and really had to wrench on it.

My husband used his dremel which works great and does not harm your hood. Years ago when you got a hood that area was already taken out. Don't know why they stopped doing that

I just got this the other day and I've been wondering the same thing. Are you guys sure it won't damage the hood?

Thanks for all the suggestions! I finally got it off by prying it with a wrench. It definitely won't harm the hood, birdielovestomatoes :)
