Smile Changing Gravel

Hi All,

I'm currently cycling my tank and at some point i want to change the gravel to sand.

Will it be ok for me to change it now or should I wait until the cycle is finished?

The tank has lots of Nitrites so would those go down if i changed the gravel?

Appreciate any help you can give as it took forever to get the cycle going Don't want to ruin it now..

Thanks!

Some bacteria colonize in the gravel, but barely any, so I would go ahead and change it now.

Great! Thanks for the reply. I don't suppose you know how long before Nitrates start to appear?

I have had Nitrites for a week or so...

Umm it really depends, can happen anywhere from 2 weeks after nitrites to 4 weeks after nitrites. Kepp your tank at 82-84 for best results, bacteria love that temp. I only cyclled one tank and IT cycled pretty quick because my dad had some cultures.

Actually in a mature tank the substrate is where most of the bacteria is. But during the cycling process, most of it will be in the filter. So I say go ahead and change it now. It might stall your cycle for a bit, but it won't be anything like the mini-cycle that the tank will experience when stocked with fish.
