It's actually a sylvania led light flute from the home depot. It has 4 white leds. I wrapped blue plastic from a candy bag around the tubes to give it the blue color. I had to dremel the side of the tube to wire it to a 5v power adapter. The light was like 10.30 and the parts were like $5.
True but then you might as well buy one of the fixtures designed for aquariums for $50. The strip from the autopart stores around here are around 30-35 and then the 12v power supplies are way over priced at the shack a minimum of 20 depending on the amperage you get. That was actually my first thought of how to do this. After I found out the prices I was like well that doesn't make much sense. I actually gutted an old phone charger for the power supply which admittedly saved me a good chunk if I had bought it too.
Pretty awesome, Mike! I'd like to get some moonlighting for my softwater community because my loaches are mainly nocturnal. It seems like DIY is the way to go with these things. Everything that I have found is really expensive.
