So I'm thinking a boy has snuck into my sorority! I have had Hermione for quite some time but she/he was really tiny and looked like all of my other girls but over the past couple weeks she/he has gotten pretty big (although just a tad bigger than Jewel) and her fins are huge. Also since I've taken out the bubbler I have noticed the beginings of a bubble nest although I have never seen any of them working on it. All of the fish in the sorority have an egg spot including this one, I'm so confussed :( What do you guys think? I also think she/he is horribly bloated and I am planning on moving whatever she/he is to the hospital tank for some treatment. Sorry about the cruddy picture, my sorority hates the paparazzi.

Best way to tell is to get her to flare. If she has a "beard" then she's a boy. If not, girl. Young males can have egg spots but if she's big, maybe it is indeed a she.

I have a spade tail with the same fins and she's a girl.

i could see an eggspot :\ and sometimes it is normal for females and to have long fins and big bodied
but i can't be sure

This is an incorrect way to tell the gender of any betta. The best way is only from the egg spot. That female looks like she is an adult and in no way a male. The flaring "beard" or overperculum is just one of the signs of which gender, though then again, the female I have has a very large overperculum. Also I've seen females with huge fins, sometimes they just look like young males, but they aren't.

Huh, I don't know much about telling the difference between male and female betta, although I'm better than I use to be. However, I have a plakat boy who's *all male* yet there are times when he's got a full belly that I can see what looks like an "egg spot" on him.

I got this boy from a small breeder, so I trust that he's a male. But if I had any doubts his crazy flaring, full beard, attacking his reflection with full open mouth trying to *kill* would be a pretty good clue.
