This is an incorrect way to tell the gender of any betta. The best way is only from the egg spot. That female looks like she is an adult and in no way a male. The flaring "beard" or overperculum is just one of the signs of which gender, though then again, the female I have has a very large overperculum. Also I've seen females with huge fins, sometimes they just look like young males, but they aren't.
