Why wouldn't this work to cycle a small tank?

If you used a sponge filter that was rated for a 5 or 10 gallon tank? You could still do a fishless cycle using minuscule amounts of ammonia. The sponge alone would be able to hold enough bacteria to cycle such a small tank. I know most of time when is it said about cycling a small tank it's due to the low surface area but wouldn't this be a way around that?

I've posed the same question and several folks agreed with the idea.

A fellow forum member, Hallyx, is doing a test with a large sponge filter in a 2.5 gallon.

The preliminary report is: it cycled in three days. I'm extending the cycling run for security...but I'm still astonished.

That's a Hydro '0' bubbler in a bare-bottom 3 gal.

I'll post the log when I populate the tank.

Could anyone recommend a good sponge filter?
