Introduction: Meet Barakus

I purchased Barakus at Walmart in December 2011. He is a crowntail and I am unsure of his color, possible marble or cambodian. Either way his tail does not seem to resemble other crowntails and I'm wondering why. Any suggestions on helping his tail growth?

Here is a video of him swimming around, flaring and protecting his bubble nest.

He looks more to me like a combtail than a crown tail. If he is a combtail as I suspect, his fins were bred that way. But he is very handsome and looks very healthy and happy!

Barakus is swimming in a 1 gallon bowl, trying to convince wife to let me purchase a 5 to 10 gallon tank but she thinks I've lost my mind. I change his water 2 times a week and it seems to keep him healthy. I think you may be right, looks more like a combtail the a crowntail.

Wow he has a great flare and love his name it suits him very well !!! Oh come on wife he needs a bigger tank he is awesome ! I have a blue crowntail in a 5 gallon he loves his tank and so much room to swim and things to explore like his plants and his cave he plays all day and all night if I would let him...lol I have to turn off the lights in hope he will rest some. Also you could get him a floating Betta Log he would love that I bet I have one and Perseus loves his ! Good luck with the wife in talking her into it, my husband kinda thought I was crazy to get a 5 gallon for a such a tiny fish but so happy I did !!!!

Just changed water yesterday and PH appears to be 8.4, going to need to bring that down. Didn't realize it was that high. The question is if I adjust the PH and it drops to 7 will that hurt him as he has been used to swimming in a higher PH?

From what I have read a high ph is not to bad and Betta will adjust to it and thats its worse to try and use something to get it down and just to leave it alone. Now I have also read that if you have hard water the tips of the crowntail might curl, do you know if you have hard or soft water ? I have soft water with a high ph like yours and my crowntail is doing fine in his water. I think dont worry about the ph and check to see if your water is hard or soft.
