Unhappy Sick Betta....Please Help! :( (putting this in the right forum, now!)

Hey all, I have a very lethargic sick betta on my hands, and am wondering if I could get advice as to how to treat him? His appearance is healthy, he is just very tired, and won't eat. I am worried that he has some form of poisoning, so I have increased the amount of water changes he gets, but that is all I really know to do. If I could get some help, that would really be great, especially because I love him to bits (would the salt treatment help?)

Thanks heaps! B.

Hello - another Aussie! (we're in ur forumz, bein upside downz)

5 litres is.. (does math badly in head) about.. 1.25 gallons. I think. So not very big. That means lots of water changes, but you seem on top of that.

First: your fish is a tad cold. He needs water steadily at about 26-27C to stay happy and healthy. Water temps shifting up and down really isn't great, that's how they end up sick.

If you have a heater, turn it up a bit. If you heater is not adjustable.. consider getting an adjustable one. =P The Dymax 30W adjustable mini heater is brilliant for tanks that size, I swear by them.

If hes 'sipping' at the air, that's normal... do you mean he's struggling to get to the top for air, or coming up way more often..?

Is your tank covered? If not, get a cover - glad wrap will do for short term.. it not only warms the air they breathe (important) but also stops them jumping out..

If turning your tank temp up doesn't help him improve, and he's not able to swim up easily for air, lower your water level a little to make it easy for him .. and we'll go from there on what might be wrong.
