cleaning/changing filter cartridges

My 10 gallon tank has been running for about 6 months with the same filter and cartridge. My tank is cycled (I think). I've read that people only really change the cartridge if it's falling apart. How would you introduce a new cartridge, and still keep the cycle going? If the cartridge still looks okay, and just needs to get the gook off of it, do you just take it out and swish it around in the water you take out during a water change?

To introduce a new cartridge, cut off some of the clothy grimy part from your old cartridge (like a 2 inch square) and insert that with your new filter cartridge. This will "seed" the new cartridge. It's true that you shouldn't replace the cartridge unless it's falling apart. :) Even if it's years later, haha.

You're exactly right about how to get the gunk off of the cartridge. :)

I love it how the filters say replace every 2-3 weeks :O

I had trouble finding a sponge filter at petco or petsmart, they told me they're for "experts" :O

sooo... if you followed the directions you'd be spending about $10 every month on filters or $6 on a sponge that'd last months or more.. I see how they want to get their money

Just my 2 cents

The only reason I replace the media cartridges is due to water flow.

That sludge inhibits the flow of water & the bio-wheels from spinning. So I have to clean it out once every 45 days or so.

Once the media is rinsed off in the siphoned water, I just stuff in some clean filter floss to capture the debris the filter sucks up otherwise it ends up back in the tank and the fish try to eat it.
