How well do they work in aquariims? I am thinking of getting one for my betta tank.

Sponge filters are very nice filters for Bettas because they don't make the surface of the water very rough. They make it very calm so it's easier for the betta. They are also the only filter that can be used in spawning.

Right now I have a HOB baffled. I think I will be changing. I would rather have something that does better for them but keeps the water clean

Sponge filters do disturb the surface but don't produce much current in the rest of the tank.
The bubbles plus the waves can reduce CO2 enough to raise the pH of your tank.

By time you factor in the cost of an air pump, airline, regulator (to turn down the air) and check valve, it costs more than a small internal (underwater) filter

Besides, they make that gawdawful noise which I thoroughly loathe.

I prefer an inexpensive internal filter with added foam for baffling the current, as well providingarea for my beneficial bacteria. It's cheaper.....and it's quieter.

What about getting the internal Tom mini filter? It is adjustable and you even have an option for a spray bar, it will disperse the water better. It is about $16 on Amazon and if you buy a bit more to make it I think $25 you get free shipping.
