recycle tank?

Do you have to recycle a tank when you do a 100% water change? What about when you change the filter cartridge? Not understanding how the tank stays cycled whenever you clean the tank totally. I would hate to start over everytime.

You will probably go through a mini cycle when chaging the filter cartridge. a 100% change will be ok, as long as the water is changed immendiately. Beneficial bateria mostly lives in the filter and surfaces. You don't really need to change a filter cartridge unless it's falling apart. if it's dirty, just give it a swish and clean it in old tank water.

Agreed with aokashi.

If you find that your filter cartridge is falling apart, you can seed your new one when you replace it by cutting off a square of the cloth from the old cartridge and inserting it with the new cartridge. I've personally just taken to sticking 100% polyester fiberfill (with no flame retardants) in my filter, haha.

Aokashi and Kfish have got it covered. In any event, it's not recommended to do a 100% change in a cycled tank. A weekly 25/50% with vacuuming is usually sufficient.

In fact it's remove DOCs (dissolved organic compounds) and to replenish minerals.
