Luckily, we got power back yesterday about 7:00pm. Heater, and filter is running smoothly, although I lost about 2 inches of water...didn't think about evaporation -_-. Oh well, tomorrow is 100% water change day since the ammonia built up and the well water is still kinda cloudy from not being run in days. Will spring water be okay to use? The grocery store sells gallons of spring water, so I was wondering if I could use that while waiting for the well water to clear up.

I wouldn't do a 100% change with spring water as the parameters could be wildly different from yours (not just pH but GH also). You could do something smaller like 30% or 50%. But it's hard on a fish to acclimate to a new set of parameters only to be changed back to another.

I thought about testing the parameters of our well water tomorrow before cleaning the tank. I have an API Freshwater Master test kit, but I couldn't tell you what the readings mean, I just know what is good and what isn't lol. If the water tests fine, but is cloudy do you think some water conditioner and I have TopFin water clarifier would do the trick to clear it up?

90% of Ohio should have power by Friday. Amanda lost power, but thank goodness we didn't. Parts of Lancaster aren't scheduled to have power until the 7th. My grandparents lost power twice :/ First from the storm and then because of AEP. As for the water, if everything test out okay it could be okay, but because it is cloudy I would bring it to a boil to make sure nothing funky is living in it. My dad just shocked out well yesterday Good thing I have a 5gal. I will need to do a change this Fri though....

Oooh, I didn't think about bacteria living in there....Maybe I'll just get water from my mother's house, she's on a well, too. Or maybe I'll just boil water, I don't know *facepalms*. I keep flushing the toilet to see if the water comes back clear. Its getting clearer, but not crystal clear like it should be.

Just out of curiosity when is the last time you shocked your well? Your suppose to do it every 1-2times a year. You could wait till it cleared, or boil it or get it from you parents. May even be a good idea to save some milk jugs and clean them out good and when another big storm rolls through fill them up incase.

We never have. In fact, I've never heard this expression. What's it all about, Striker?

Kill of any harmful bacteria that grows in your well. It can also clean out the water pipes a little. Essentially you are cleaning the water.

Forgot to add the most important part(which is why you save up all of the water you can before you do it) To clean out the well you have to add bleach. I think we add a jug or two. Last time we shocked it heavily and the bleach was in the water for about 2 weeks, or at least that is when I stopped noticing it.

Here's two sources that tell you how to do it.

http://www.water-research.net/shockwelldisinfection.htm

http://msucares.com/pubs/publications/p1865.htm

We DO NOT have our water tested(that I'm aware of) which its why we try to do it twice a year.
