I'm sorry for your loss :(

As far as cleaning, you can run it through the dishwasher, but don't use soap. I suggest running it through twice, just in-case there was any soap residue in the dishwasher the first time. Since it's hot out (or at least it is here in MD) you can set it outside on a patio table or deck to air dry.

Good luck with your two new boys, if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask. :)

Thank you so much, Lizzy! And yes, it's as hot as blazes here in NY as well. I hadn't considered the dishwasher. That's pretty brilliant!

The tanks had glass beads on the bottom. If I can contain them somehow, like maybe in a lingerie bag, could I possibly put them in the dishwasher as well? I imagine it would be alright if they are in a container where they can't go rogue and shatter the tank.

Let me think this one over. Perhaps I'll just give the beads a hot shower instead.

More to follow. I'll let everyone know when our new charges arrive.

R.I.P., George & Ringo

First off, I'm so sorry for your loss! But, as you said, he's leaving behind the hope for more raggedy fishy rescues, and he's safe and won't ever have to worry about anything again. Still, I'm so sorry that you got left behind...it's always so very sad when they go. :(

You can boil the marbles in a regular saucepan, and the entire tank can go into the dishwasher as well. :) I started doing that years ago when I had a nasty columnaris infection from some chain-store-bought fishies. :P The dish cycle finally got rid of it for good. :)

Oh, and I saw this and thought of you:
(it's written for dogs, but I believe it rings true for any pet. :)

When humans die, they make a will
To leave their homes and all they have
To those they love.
I, too, would make a will if I could write.

To some poor wistful lonely stray
I leave my happy home,
My dish, my cosy bed, my cushioned chair, my toy,
The well loved lap, the gently stroking hand,
The loving voice,
The place I made in someone's heart,
The love, that at the last could help me to
A peaceful painless end
Held in loving arms.

If I should die Oh do not say,
"No more a pet I'll have
To grieve me by it's loss"
Seek out some lonely, unloved dog
And give my place to him.
This is my legacy I leave behind
'Tis all I have to give.

-unknown

I'm sure that George and Ringo will be pleased that you're passing it on. :)

Wow......that is so beautiful. I am truly moved.

And these are words I live by, in that I have left nine cats, a guinea pig and now five fish at the Bridge. Annabelle was my latest cat to travel there, at the age of 20 and having survived cancer at the age of 18. As your beautifully shared words stated, the following week we adopted two more cats from a foster home.

There is always room for someone who needs me, and fish are no exception.

Thank you for the beautiful moment we just shared. Animal lovers really and truly get it.

The marbles you can boil in a regular saucepan, as for how long...just until you think they've been disenfected. I would do a rolling boil 5-10 minutes and again just airdry.

You are so welcome. :) I know how you feel, I've got a horse, two dogs, and four bettas currently at my home for the same reasons. :)
I like to believe that when one leaves, they have a welcome party waiting for them. :)
You never forget them, they just live in a place that isn't "here" anymore. :)

They're not just pets, they're not JUST anything. They are tiny lives with a divine spark and so much love to give. Mourning a pet is not a weakness, it's a sign of incredible love and the strength to move forward. :)

Best of luck to your new boys, and I know they will have a *fantastic* home in your care. :)

Wink A new beginning

Thank you, Blue Fish, for affirming what we know so well.....

John and Paul have been purchased and are being held at Petland for us. The tanks are in the dishwasher on the china setting, and I'm cooking up a large pot of glass bead soup.

Here's my next question. I have several plastic plants and some new little statues that I just bought. What's the best way to clean them?

Hopefully, by tomorrow John and Paul will be safe in their new homes.

It's a new beginning.

Thank you for all your encouragement and kind words. Unfortunately Ringo left us sometime during the night.
Awwwh. I was hoping he would of recovered but I am happy to hear you have 2 new ones on the way . Live and learn is the best we can do. I killed the first 3 or 4 bettas I had because some idiot at petco told me if I had a filter I never needed to change the water I also had no idea about the nitrogen cycle either.
