Rose Tails

Iím not very familiar about breeding betta fishÖ.but I have been wondering this for a while now; Do you have to cull Rose Tails or tail types similar to that? I have heard that you canít breed them, but is that because of a defect the tail causes? While browsing AquaBid there have been many for sale, but are they just meant for pets?
I have no intention of breeding, just curiosity. :)

I was curious about this too, I find them absolutely stunning. If I remember right, I think it has something to do with their tails getting in the way, or spawning fry with fins that are too big to manage. I think its like ligers and mules, they are able to be spawned, but they shouldn't spawn themselves.

I am pretty sure that's wrong; hope someone else knows better! :D

Yes. They carry a lot of deformities. Bad scales, short lives, bad bodies, collapsing fins etc.

Cool

There is no standard at the IBC for rose tails. And yes they seem sometimes to be linked to deformities, but most inbreed animals will show the same. Others feel that they are the road to true full moon Bettas and only cull the ones with "real" deformities, shortened bodies, non uniform scales, shortened dorsals....

I keep an open mind, and I think they are beautiful fish.

Jeff.

I have a rosetail I would love to breed, but it's unethical. If you want to breed, start out with HMPK.

@jeffegg2: So are half-moons and full-moons different...or are they the same thing?
@xShainax: I would love to breed, but I don't have the time or money to start. This was just a question about what other breeders do with their fish.

Thats fine! I love HMPK though. When I lived in Japan we would breed them a lot because I hated when my halfmoons started tail biting. >:( The next betta I get will hopefully be a HMPK. :)

Ugh, I hate my betta's sometimes. My rosetail bit his tail to look like a CT
