Question To medicate, or not to medicate?

Hey Guys!

I have a bit of a problem. The betta I bought today has very mild fin rot from the store I got him from. I now have him in a planted, filtered, heated, 9 gallon tank and I will feed him Hikari Betta Bio Gold pellets once he's settled in. I plan on doing 33% water changes once every week.

Do I need to treat him with Aquarium Salt or other medications? If so, can I use Saxa Rock Salt as Aquarium Salt? If not, should I do water changes more often because of his fin rot?

I hope he will recover without the stress of medications! Thanks in advance!

He doesn't need medication. As long as he has clean water, he's going to heal. :) High-protein foods are optional to speed up the process of growing tissue. Post pics when his fins are fully healed!

But the thing is, if the fin rot is still there, surely the fins won't heal? Wouldn't they just keep dying off?

I don't think it would keep rotting if the water is kept very clean. You could use aquarium salt I guess. But no more than 10 Days. I think you're also supposed to do daily 100% water changes. See if clean water is doing anything good to his fins first. Like 3 Days with clean water. If there is improvement, you don't have to use AQ salt.

I'll just see how it goes for a few days but if it gets worse I'll medicate.

Just a heads up, if you do need to use AQ salt, make sure you put him in a treatment tank (or even small container, the cup he came in or one of those resealable lunch containers work). Aquarium salt will melt live plants.

I'm not sure about the Saxa salt if you decide to medicate. Isn't that sea salt for people? I'd be afraid that would do something to him...If you decide to medicate, just get some regular Aquarium salt, just to be on the safe side. :)

Good luck to you!! :)

OK, thanks guys! So clean water will kill off the fin rot....?

I've been looking on the internet; apparently, Saxa TABLE salt is dangerous to fish but Saxa ROCK salt is OK.

Oh, okay, good to know. :) I hadn't heard of it and just did a quick search, but it sounds like you've got better information than I do. :)

I've only dealt with fin rot once...and he needed meds, BUT, I didn't know about the salt treatments either, and I now know I wasn't changing his water nearly often enough. :(

Good luck to you, it sounds like your betta is going to be a beautiful guy!
(and I love your avatar...Guinea pigs are just the cutest little pets... ;)
